School Improv Sessions
Through laughter and teamwork, students gain confidence, resilience, and connection while practicing the social-emotional skills they need in school and beyond.
“As students prepare and gain skills for adulthood, improv has helped them refine their social skills, improve their self confidence, and develop skills for self advocacy. Working with MNprov has also helped me in my own teaching practice, as I have learned strategies that support social and emotional development, cognitive flexibility, and conversational skills.”

Using educator conversations and surveys, MNProv designs a custom program to target the unique needs of the students and to evaluate student growth. A MNprov teaching artist will lead ten improv workshops, each for one hour a week.

Educators are encouraged to participate in the improv games with their students so that they become comfortable with improv and begin to develop skills to lead applied improv games independently with their students. MNprov provides resources to help educators implement each week’s games with their students and are available to answer questions or provide troubleshooting as needed. Please contact us for costs.

MNprov’s student workshops offer optimal conditions for students to strengthen their social, emotional, and communication skills. Improv mirrors the fluid dynamics of everyday social interactions, providing students an authentic environment in which to practice. This increases the probability of generalization to real life situations. Instead of practicing social skills using contrived scenarios developed by others, students are empowered to use their own ideas. This authenticity, along with a safe and fun environment, motivates students to remain engaged in the activities.

When dealing with teachers and students, MNProv uses both formative and summative evaluations. Pre-session surveys target students’ areas of need and guide instruction. During each session the instructor creates a “scaffold” of instruction to meet observed needs. At the end of the ten-week session, students and educators complete a post-session survey, and educators receive a summary of their students’ progress.
